ACUTE/CHRONIC SKIN

01

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which is a cause of an overactive immune system. This results in the rapid build-up of skin cells. Once the cells start building, they cause scaling on the skin’s surface.

Usually, skin cells grow in the deeper layers of the skin and eventually rise to the surface. Later on, they fall off and the process continues. Typically, the life cycle of a skin cell is one month. However, in people suffering from psoriasis since the production of cells is extreme, they do not have the time to fall off. As a result of which the cells start building up.

Psoriatic scales develop as thick, red patches and appear to be whitish-silver in texture. The condition causes inflammation and redness around these scales. Sometimes, these patches will crack and bleed.

02

Eczema

Eczema, also known by the name of dermatitis is a skin condition that results in swelling or inflammation. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease and the most common form of endogenous eczema. It is characterized by dryness and itchiness. Sometimes, due to a history of asthma or other allergies in the family, a person can inherit atopic dermatitis genetically.

03

Urticaria

Urticaria, which is also known as Hives is a disease which is characterized by the sudden development of itchy and swollen bumps on the skin. These bumps can appear if the body reacts to any allergens or can even appear for reasons not known. They last for less than 1-2 days in the same spot and once they disappear, they don’t leave any trace/scar behind. These bumps can develop on any part of the body and they vary in size. When hives join together to form a group, they are called plaques. However, when these bumps develop under the skin, the condition is termed as Angioedema. It is similar to hives but lasts longer than it and the swelling vanishes in less than a day.

Fungal Infections

Fungal infections are not only common in India, but also throughout the world. Our immune system saves us from much of the troubles caused by microbes, bacteria, etc. However, a fungal infection occurs when an area of our body is overtaken by an invading fungus, the capacity of which becomes too much for the immune system to handle. The fungus grows best in a warm and moist climate which increases the cases of fungal infections in summers & rainy season.

Infections involving Tinea (name of a group of diseases caused by a fungus) are usually not serious, however, they can be pretty uncomfortable. The types of tinea include ringworm, athlete’s foot & jock itch. The seriousness of fungal infections varies from one type to another.
